Accelerating a more sustainable future: turning commitments into action
I'm excited to share more about our ongoing journey toward a more sustainable future: a path deeply rooted in Kalmar’s vision and strategic focus areas.
Our President and CEO, Sami Niiranen, highlighted our commitment to embedding sustainability into every part of our operations. Building on this, I'd like to look into some of the actions we're taking to realize Kalmar’s ambitious sustainability targets.
Commitment to Science Based Targets
Validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), we've set near-term goals to reduce our scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 90% and scope 3 emissions by at least 40% by 2030, using 2023 as our baseline. Our long-term ambition is to achieve net-zero emissions across all scopes by 2045. Achieving these ambitious emission reduction targets is not a walk in the park; achieving net-zero by 2045, requires significant changes and innovations across all operations and supply chains. However, these targets and actions to meet these targets highlight our dedication to limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C and demonstrate our proactive approach to climate change mitigation.
Advancing electric solutions and circular economy principles
Electrification is at the heart of our strategy and sustainability journey. Our eco portfolio, featuring electric and low-carbon solutions, empowers our customers to reduce their emissions and transition to more sustainable operations. An electric reachstacker, for instance, can reduce its lifetime carbon footprint by up to 77% when charged with 100% fossil-free electricity, compared to a diesel counterpart. A tangible example of how our innovations contribute to climate change mitigation.
Creating a fully electric product portfolio was a significant undertaking, and I'm very proud to say Kalmar has achieved this. However, another key challenge lies in building the necessary charging infrastructure for our customers. We are actively working to support this transition through close collaboration and finding the tailored solutions with and for our customers for any challenges they might face in going electric.
Transitioning to a circular economy is also a key driver in our strategy. We're committed to designing products for longevity, increasing reuse and refurbishment, and reducing reliance on finite resources. By maximizing the use of recycled materials, such as recycled steel, we not only minimize our environmental impact but also promote resource efficiency throughout.
Steel is a key material in our equipment, and decarbonizing its production is essential to achieving our climate goals. By joining the Near Zero Steel ecosystem project, Kalmar is helping to create the market conditions needed for green steel to scale and stay competitive.
This is not just about environmental responsibility - it’s also about innovation and long-term value for our customers.
Beyond our environmental goals, Kalmar is deeply committed to social responsibility. We believe that our success is intrinsically linked to the well-being of our employees and the people within our value chain.
Stay tuned for more on how we’re putting our values into action beyond the environment. Next, we’ll share how Kalmar is managing social responsibility, from human rights to health, safety, and inclusion.
